The Arc was founded in 1950 by a small group of parents and other concerned individuals. At that time, little was known about the condition of intellectual disabilities (then referred to as mental retar-dation) or its causes; there were virtually no programs and activities in communities to assist in the development and care of children and adults with intellectual disabilities and or to help support families. In 2010, The Arc celebrated its 60th anniversary.
The Arc of Union County is a community resource committed to improving the quality of life for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families through advocacy, education, supports and referrals. Our agency is a vital part of the lives of people who live every day with developmental disabilities such as autism, Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, and dozens of other diagnoses. We are a 501 (c)(3) organization and have been serving the Union County area since 1981.
